This work explores the process and inspiration behind the creation of a sculpture that is based on the myth of Icarus. Starting from the initial concept and sketches towards the final design in wood, using different artistic techniques such as sketching in pencil, modelling in clay and making a plaster mould. The selection of linden wood as a material was explained because of its mechanical properties, ease of processing and availability. The work describes in detail the properties of wood that are essential for the sculpting process. It was particularly emphasized that wood, as a material, allows artists to express the strength and durability of their works through a solid structure that allows precise shaping and detailing. Analysing the symbolism of the myth of Icarus, the work explores the universal themes of human ambition, limits and the search for self-knowledge. Icarus' fall symbolizes not only physical failure, but deeper themes of longing for the unattainable and the human will to transcend limitations. Through artistic creation, I was able to integrate the personal dimension of my struggle with physical challenges, which contributed to the deeper meaning of the sculpture as a therapeutic process of introspection. In my work, I look back at the artists who inspired me. Their works and techniques served as a guide for me, helping me develop my own style and approach. Finally, the work reflects how art can convey layered symbolism through the interpretation of mythological motifs, providing viewers with a deeper insight into universal and personal themes concerning human existence and artistic expression.
